Dressmaker Troubleshooting: Missing Pieces, Lace & Money

Start with the confirmed Build 403 and 410 fixes; missing pieces, restart refunds, and a green brief without Deliver still rely on player reports.

Answer summary

Start with the confirmed Build 403 and 410 fixes; missing pieces, restart refunds, and a green brief without Deliver still rely on player reports.

Check your build before trying a workaround

The studio fixed several launch-week blockers in Builds 403 and 410. Let Steam finish updating, then retry the same step before following a community workaround.

BuildDateOfficial fixes relevant to common problems
403September 22, 2026Invisible cutting-tutorial cursor; missing Back button in the store tutorial; bell progression; lace-trim tags; payment when a failed dress is still accepted; single keyhole bodice; buttons on extremely wide screens
410September 24, 2026Clickable sketchbook component names; safer mouse-wheel behaviour over cutting-room inventory; spool clicks to change thread colour; mannequin slot hints; tutorial softlock caused by opening the sketchbook before the bell

If the problem remains, note your installed build, operating system, display size, commission, and workshop station. The launch post said smaller patches would continue, so a later build may retire advice on this page.

Evidence key

“Official” below means the fix appears in studio patch notes. “Community report” means a player showed or described it, but the studio has not documented the behaviour.

Lace or trim does not count

Symptom: the brief asks for lace or trim, but the requirement stays grey after you place an item.

Build 403 officially fixed some lace-trim items that were not tagged as lace trim. Update first, then:

  1. Inspect the item tag in the shop or inventory.
  2. Use an item explicitly tagged as lace trim.
  3. If the card names a length, check the live counter; the patch notes do not claim a fix for length counting.

Older Prototype 0.5.5 comments about lace clipping do not establish a fix for the Steam release.

A failed commission paid nothing

Build 403 changed the retail game so you are paid when a character accepts the commission, even when the result is marked as a failure. If an accepted dress still pays nothing on a later build, record it as a new bug rather than repeating the launch workaround.

Tutorial softlock or missing cursor

The official notes cover three launch problems:

  • The cutting-room tutorial cursor disappeared — fixed in Build 403.
  • The store tutorial had no Back button — fixed in Build 403.
  • Opening the sketchbook before ringing the bell could softlock the tutorial — fixed in Build 410.

Update, restart the affected tutorial step, and use the bell when the game asks for the next customer.

A pattern piece is missing after cutting

A full-release video from September 24 showed a piece disappear while it was being placed on the mannequin. Leaving the station, returning to the shop, and re-entering made it visible again. This is a community observation, not an official fix.

Try these checks in order:

  1. Hover the inventory panel and read the Build 410 mannequin-slot hint.
  2. Leave the mannequin station and re-enter it.
  3. Open the sketchbook and use the clickable component names added in Build 410 to audit every required piece.
  4. Recycle a wrong, uncommitted piece and cut the intended cloth again.

Build 410’s slot hint helps locate a panel; the notes do not say it restores lost pieces. No reliable retail source in this research pass showed that Save and Quit restores a missing cut piece.

Requirements are green but Deliver is missing

The September 27 research pass did not find a verified retail clip of this exact symptom. Before treating it as a softlock:

  • Confirm you are at the delivery station rather than pinning or sewing.
  • Ring the bell only if you are waiting for the next client.
  • Compare the mannequin pieces with the clickable sketchbook component list.
  • Update beyond the Build 410 opening-tutorial softlock.

Steam’s discussion list contained a thread about players who could not find a commission. A thread title alone does not prove a green-meter Deliver bug. Prototype reports of a missing finish button also remain specific to Prototype 0.5.5.

Do not rely on “Restart Dress refunds materials” as a game rule.

Ran out of money or fabric

Use the least disruptive recovery route available:

  1. Recycle pieces you have not committed as trimmed waste.
  2. Once off-the-rack dresses unlock, make a modest shop-window design and sell it. A developer comment says this unlock happens after the third commission.
  3. A player video suggests choosing Sell instead of Complete commission, then remaking the brief. This site has not confirmed how that choice affects reputation or story progression, so treat it as a last-resort community trick.

No official reset-progress or refund table appeared in the patch notes checked for this page.

Sewing controls or launch problems

Steam discussions included launch-week reports of sewing controls not responding, failure to launch, and crashes. Those titles do not establish one shared cause.

Useful first checks are:

  • Finish the current Steam update and confirm the installed build.
  • Verify the game files in Steam.
  • Follow the input prompts shown by the current build.
  • If sewing is difficult rather than unresponsive, player videos show a Settings option named Sewing Assist; the official patch notes do not define how it changes the minigame.

The research also found player confusion around the two cutting-room scissor buttons. Because the sources disagree on their mapping, this site does not publish a guessed control description.

Steam Deck and controller status

The official launch note said the game runs quickly on Steam Deck while proper controller support remains planned. A developer reply from September 21 did not recommend handheld play yet because the controls were finicky; docked keyboard-and-mouse use was the practical suggestion.

Steam’s store badge was Playable during the research pass. That badge does not promise a fully optimized controller layout.

Report a new bug with enough detail

Use the Steam discussions or the studio’s linked community channel and include:

  • Steam app 4019220
  • Installed build number
  • Windows or macOS
  • Display resolution if buttons are missing
  • Commission name exactly as shown on the card
  • The workshop station and the last action before the problem
  • Whether the issue returns after restarting the game
